Thyroid & Zinc: Things You Should Know

There are many supplements on the market today for thyroid health, but zinc is by far the most effective for many types of thyroid dysfunction. Each person is different so it is important to consult with a physician as to how much zinc is appropriate for thyroid health. Millions of people suffer from zinc deficiencies in their diet, so taking a supplement would be most beneficial.

Even though lab results may look normal, there could be an underlying issue that goes on undetected. The T3 receptor requires sufficient zinc to function properly and for proper conversion of T4 into T3. Moreover, zinc has a significant impact on immune system function and is vital for thyroid health.

You may be experiencing a deficiency in zinc if you have symptoms such as slow healing wounds, insulin resistance, poor vision and hearing, diarrhea, loss of taste, a poor immune system function, eczema, low Free T4 and Free T3 levels, or an elevated reverse T3 and elevated thyroid antibodies.

Zinc deficiency is one of the most common problems associated with thyroid disorders and therefore, restoring appropriate amounts of zinc in your diet can have vast improvements in overall health. Aside from supplements, there are many foods that are high in zinc such as red meant, pork, chicken and whole grains that should be added to your diet if you are experiencing a zinc deficiency.

If you think you may have a zinc deficiency, perhaps you should call your physician today and schedule a consultation to be tested.
