Posted on October 26 2016
Many people with thyroid dysfunction suffer from insomnia, but there are several things you can do to get the sleep you need.
First, it is important to note that each individual is different and you need to examine your entire body and daily surroundings in the environment before looking into treatment for optimal thyroid function. Depending on any medical conditions you may have or certain medications your are taking, it is important to seek the advise of a physician before taking any thyroid supplements since they will vary with each individual. This is especially true if you are pregnant. Your physiology is unique and therefore, making the right health choices will depend on your specific body.
It is important to address the underlying issues if you want to address your issues with insomnia. However, there are ways to improve your sleep regardless of your physiology. One way is to exercise daily along with meditation at night before bed. Yoga is a form of meditation that you can also do in the evening. It is also important to drink chamomile tea after dinner that will help begin the relaxation process before bed. As for supplements, taking extra calcium or magnesium before bed will also help balance stress hormones and help with insomnia. Melatonin has also been known to help patients who suffer from insomnia. Our adrenals and thyroid are connected, so insomnia is a common issue for those who suffer from adrenal fatigue.
Speak to your physician if it is an issue in your life and work on daily stresses that could be adding to your condition. Last, but not least, doing some or all of the above mentioned ways to help with your insomnia may very well help you get the rest your body desperately needs.
